The biggest match of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 gets out of the way early during the second leg slate. Real Madrid and Manchester United resume their marquee tie on Tuesday, and both sides are in excellent form. Both teams are also relatively injury free, and are only expected to be missing one first choice player apiece.

Danny Welbeck was the hero for United in the first leg, scoring a crucial away goal for his team. Los Merengues pulled one back, but they’re facing a tricky prospect at Old Trafford, with their hosts having scored an away goal. Jose Mourinho’s proven to be a master of the defensive draw in knockout competitions, but he will have to set up his team to attack on Tuesday night.

Egypt unrest: Morsi declares emergency in three cities

Members of the Republican Guard move barbed wire barricades to close a road leading to the presidential palace in CairoEgyptian President Mohammed Morsi has declared a state of emergency in the cities of Port Said, Suez and Ismalia after days of deadly unrest. A daily curfew from 21:00 to 06:00 will be imposed for 30 days from Monday, he said in a speech to the nation. At least 33 people died over the weekend in Port Said, where a court judgment sparked rioting. Unhappiness with Mr Morsi’s rule fuelled unrest elsewhere. In the capital Cairo, anti-government protesters clashed with security forces near Tahrir Square for a fourth consecutive day. The liberal opposition accuses Mr Morsi of being autocratic and driving through a new constitution that does not protect adequately freedom of expression or religion. The government is also being blamed for a deepening economic crisis. Mr Morsi said he mighty take further steps “for the sake of Egypt” as it was his “duty” as president. According to the BBC, he also invited political leaders to a “national dialogue” on Monday.

State of Emmergency

The state of emergency applies to the three cities along the Suez Canal, and their surrounding regions. “I have said I am against any emergency measures but I have said that if I must stop bloodshed and protect the people then I will act,” the president said. “If I must I will do much more for the sake of Egypt. This is my duty and I will not hesitate. Protests erupted in Port Said after a court sentenced 21 local people over deadly football violence nearly a year ago. BBC Correspondents say the city remains in a state of rage after the 21 defendants were sentenced over riots which killed 74 people after a football game last February. February’s violence began when fans of Port Said side al-Masry attacked visiting supporters from Cairo club al-Ahly. Fans flooded on to pitch attacking Ahly players and fans as the match ended. Most of the victims died of concussion, cuts and suffocation. About 30 people were killed in unrest in the city on Saturday with a further three dying at a mass funeral on Sunday.

Football key to Africa’s peace and unity: Zuma

President Jacob Zuma has emphasised that football is key in driving social change, peace and unity on African continent. He was speaking during the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations final draw at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban last night.

Zuma pulled the name of Cape Verde out of the pot as the first team to play Bafana Bafana in the opening match at FNB stadium in Johannesburg on January 19. Angola and Morocco are the other two teams in Group A.

President Zuma says South Africans is ready to host the tournament next year.

“Each match will be a demonstration that sport, particularly football, can be a catalyst for social change, peace and unity on the African continent. For this reason the AU’s long term aim is to promote football as an intergrative sport.”

Five stadia will be utilised for the soccer showpiece – FNB in Johannesburg, Moses Mabhida in Durban, Mbombela in Nelspruit, Nelson Mandela Bay in Port Elizabeth and Royal Bafokeng in Rustenburg.

CAF President Issa Hayatou said they were confident that South Africa would host a successful tournament.

Liberia’s Opposition Vice Standard Bearer George Weah: Says Party Strategizing for Next Election

Liberian football legend and politician George Oppong Weah says his Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) party remains committed to the fight for political and economic changes that will bring about improvement in the quality of life for all Liberians.

Speaking to (VOA) James Butty, Weah said corruption, nepotism and elitism continue to deprive Liberians of the quality of life they deserve.

The soccer legend who celebrates his 46th birthday today (Monday), thanked his supporters and said his party is re-strategizing for the next election.

“I would like to first all thank God for His many blessings and kindness toward me and my family. I also want to extend thanks and appreciation to my fans and friends, my political institution, the mighty Congress for Democratic Change and the Liberian for all the love and support given me throughout these years. Let me use this occasion again to remind the Liberian people that we are still in the political vanguard and are still striving to bring about those changes that will improve the quality for the masses of our people,” he said.

Weah, who ran for president in 2005 and was his party’s vice presidential candidate in 2011, would not confirm or deny rumors that he is considering running for a senate seat. He would only say that his party is re-strategizing for the next election.

“First of all, my political institution, we have our strategy. I think we are going to re-strategize to make sure that we go for the 2014 election, to bring people that can win those positions. You know that for these positions you have to go through a primary. But for now, I can’t say anything more than what I can tell you,” Weah said.

There have been dissentions recently within the CDC resulting in the defection of some staunch members, including Senator Geraldine Doe-Sheriff.

Weah said the CDC, like all political institutions, is governed by its own rules and that no member is above what he called the “norms” of the party.

“First of all, when I was vice a presidential candidate, Geraldine [Doe-Sheriff] went against the norms of the party and our leader at the time, Winston Tubman felt that the statement was reckless. They took it to the Executive Committee and based on their findings, Geraldine was expelled from the party,” Weah said.

He said another member, Horatio Gould, a former chairman of the CDC was impeached due to what Weah called malfeasant, taking $25,000 of the party’s money.

“The laws are there. Anybody who does these acts in our political party, we can’t be claiming that the Ellen government is corrupt and then we promote corruption. And there are rules and guidelines to primaries, and he was not qualified to go to the primary. Based on that he decided to go his own way to form an alternative Congress for Democratic Change,” Weah said.

Weah denied he has been too controlling when it comes to who should hold the party’s top posts. He said the purpose of the CDC is not to alienate or marginalize people. Rather, Weah said the purpose of the CDC is to serve as an organization where all Liberians can come together and make their country a beautiful place.

“I cannot take CDC for my personal party because if I have done that, Counselor Winston Tubman would not have run as a presidential candidate for the CDC. I would have hijacked the position. But it shows that I’m not that person that they are talking about. I’m a peaceful person. I believe in giving people a chance. So those who have left the CDC because of their own personal reasons, they need to check themselves because the best thing to do if you err is to have character and say that you have erred,” Weah said.

Weah described as immoral and careless, comments recently attributed to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf about the 2005 presidential election, a statement which clearly contradicts CDC Acarous Gray position on the impeachment of President Ellen Johnson- Sirleaf.

Speaking recently in Harlem, New York City, President Sirleaf reportedly said that women who voted for in the 2005 election had told her that they took away their children’s voting cards because if they did not do so, those children would have voted for a younger candidate.

The CDC lawmaker (Acarous Gray) said was a criminal matter in Liberia to deprive people of the right to vote, and as a result the president should be impeached for what he termed as “aiding and abetting cheating during the country’s 2005 presidential election”.

George Weah was the presidential candidate for the CDC and went into the runoff election against then candidate Ellen Johnson- Sirleaf during the conduct of the 2005 elections.

“The only thing I can say about that comment coming from the President is that it is immoral and careless. But I’m not surprised because the CDC highlighted this in 2005 and 2011. It undermines the peace and stability and it is a total disregard for our democratic environment that we strive to develop and maintain in Liberia. But again, Liberians must move forward and use this admission of guilt by Madam Sirleaf to rebuild our electoral process and continue to support the reforms suggested by a consortium of political parties,” he said.

Weah said if democracy is to be sustained in Liberia, political parties must get public funding.

“You know a lot of people criticize [the idea of] public funding of political parties. But who are the public? Political fans and sympathizers are the public. They pay their taxes. But I think it is important that we pass that into law to give the political parties the independence to sustain their parties so when it comes to elections, there will not be those situations where the chairmen will accusing their members of going to another party because they took bribes and all that. We need to stop that because that’s electoral fraud,” Weah said.

Didier Drogba says he is “really happy” in China and intends to see out his two-and-a-half-year contract at Shanghai Shenhua. The 34-year-old Ivorian soccer genius left Chelsea in the summer to join Shanghai.

According to BBC sports, reports of financial instability at the club has raised doubts over the Ivorian’s future and led to suggestions he could return to the Premier League.

But Drogba has told Football Focus he expects to remain in China until the end of his contract and “maybe more”.

Drogba has scored five goals in seven games for the Chinese Super League outfit

“I hope more because I’m really happy here,” he said. “I miss the Premier League because it’s the best league in the world, but really I don’t regret my choice.

“I just arrived like two months ago so I’m really happy. I am, I’m really happy here so I have no reasons to leave. I don’t want to leave here.”

Drogba scored 157 goals during his eight years at Chelsea and was central to the London club’s first Champions League title last season.

He arrived at Shenhua midway through the Chinese Super League campaign, eight weeks after ex-Fulham boss Jean Tigana had stepped down as head coach. The side have had a disappointing campaign and are ninth in the table with six games remaining.

“I want to stay here, as long as I can win some trophies with my team and make our fans very happy,” added Drogba.

“It’s difficult at the moment, but I know that there’s hope and I believe.”

Drogba, who also denied reports he was not being paid by the Chinese club, described winning the Champions League with Chelsea – he scored the winning penalty in the final – as the “best moment of my career”.

“To be able to win it in that kind of game was perfect and it’s something you will never forget,” he said.

“But you have to carry on in life, so now I am focused on what I can bring to the Chinese league.

“Hopefully, within a few years, when my contract finishes here, I will be sitting with you and talking about how fantastic it was to win the Asian Champions League.”
